I think by most reports, people who find themselves in this line of work are certain by a fairly young age that they are this way inclined. I have a clairvoyant/clairaudient friend who has been hearing the voices of her guides since she was three. Ironically, she is deaf, but she hears the otherside clearly. Not all of us start out so young. I had my first visit from a benevolent sentient being at age 15. I was in my bedroom, when a spirit presenting itself as Jesus Christ appeared and gave me an energy healing. I didn't know this was a healing at the time. It felt like a whoosh of energy from my feet to my brain that left me in a state of ecstasy. I knew perfect love for a moment. It was incredible.
From that point on I developed an obsession with natural healing. Mainly herbs and energy. Which is strange since I didn't consciously link that first meeting with healing. I quickly realised Catholicism was not where it was at if I wanted to become adept at these crafts. So I promptly switched to Witchcraft. There was an airy fairy fluffy wuffy new age movement going on in the late 80's, so I jumped on board. I was lucky enough to have an auntie who was a witch and ran a coven in North Queensland, so I didn't feel like a rebellious freak. It all felt good, normal and natural to me. Empowering and positive. This is not everybody's experience of the occult. So, take care when choosing a group. We have certainly run into a few bonifide dodgies - people occupying significant positions in society, who walk the "left hand" path so to speak. Self serving, selfish, undisciplined, unethical and overly dramatic in their ritual presentation in my opinion. (I mean, if you need to kill an animal in order to create focus and intent, then you need some help. Perhaps a meditation class with the local Geshi would be in order. Credit where credit is due- the Tibetans do it best.) Beware of style over substance.
So, I guess I did a lot of reading in those early days. Dion Fortune, Star Hawk, Delores Ashcroft Nowicki, Amber K. All nice little beginners texts. But it wasn't until I was 22, that I really opened the gates.

gist.....
I've been working with an angel/spirit guide for 15 years. If you want to know the pros and cons of this type of work, I'm going to try and present my experiences in a non-fluff fashion. You might want to read about some of my experiences before you say yes or no to this kind of work. It is a hard path. Not quite sure I'd say yes if I had my time over again.
